A.I.S.E. welcomes the conclusions of the second meeting of the High Level Roundtable on the implementation of the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, at which A.I.S.E. Vice President Heather Barker (Reckitt) represented the detergents and maintenance products industry.
A.I.S.E. shares the goals of the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) to prioritise the protection of human health and the environment. A.I.S.E. was pleased to hear Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius’ acknowledgment of the importance of stakeholder input in this major transition, which will involve significant socioeconomic and cultural changes.
One of A.I.S.E.’s key priorities for the CSS is a more harmonised and consistent approach to enforcement controls, to ensure that only safe products are placed on the EU market and to safeguard a level playing field for European businesses. A.I.S.E. is delighted by the adoption of the High Level Roundtable’s report on enforcement and compliance. This report, which includes ten key recommendations, represents an important consensus between Roundtable members – drawn from industry, civil society, the scientific community and Member States – and sets the tone for future successful cooperation within the expert group.
A.I.S.E. especially welcomes the adoption of recommendation 4 on actions to secure harmonised and coordinated enforcement, which will help to preserve the integrity of the European Single Market for detergents and maintenance products, and urges concentrating enforcement efforts on the areas of greatest risk to safety.
A.I.S.E. now looks forward to providing its input to the third Roundtable meeting in May 2022, during the French Presidency of the European Union, and its focus on the strategic Research & Innovation agenda and Safe & Sustainable by Design.
